Who is Fledging Birders?
Actually, anyone who actively tries to foster an appreciation of birds and birding in
others is "fledging birders"!
The Fledging Birders program is a key component to the environmental education
mission of National Biodiversity Parks, a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization.
All the strategies on this site have been used by our staff to introduce students to bird
watching and develop NBP's upcoming outreach programs.

About Us
Why a "Fledging Birders" web site?
The program's director discovered birding "later in life". Shortly after becoming obsessed
with birds, he also became a father. He feared that pending parental duties meant the
end of his birding days. Wrong! He quickly discovered the immense pleasure of sharing
birds and nature with his children.
As a Special Education teacher, he helped guide his students to success by making
new, challenging concepts both interesting and meaningful for them. He started using
the same strategy to introduce the students to birding. The positive changes these
"birding students" exhibited in the classroom, both academically and behaviorally, were
amazing.
Seeing the elation of his own children as they birded, he wanted to share it with others.
However, after witnessing the profound effects birding holds for children, he realized all
children should to be given the opportunity to benefit from birding as well as the natural
world in general.
Hopefully, other birders can use some of the same strategies to inspire the little ones in
their own lives to enjoy birds. Contact us for helpful ideas!
