Break-out Sessions The concurrent sessions will highlight practical programs that can help you reach a variety of communities with your own bird education efforts. Sessions include: 1st Session Options Engaging Latino Audiences will provide new insights and helpful suggestions based on a targeted research project in conjunction with International Migratory Bird Day. presenter: Susan Bonfield from Environment for the Americas Birding: The Next Generation Throwing a party to "celebrate" migration or resident birds is a great way to bring the excitement of birding to others, especially families and youth. Learn from the incredible success of the Ohio Young Birders' Club and the Winter Bird Festival in Washington DC. presenters: Kim Kaufman from Black Swamp Bird Observatory & Mike Mangiaracina from Brent Elementary, Washington, DC TogetherGreen supports efforts to engage new audiences in conservation action. This session will include overview of the program, examples of past projects and information on how YOU can apply for fellowships and grants. presenter: Eddie Gonzalez from National Audubon Society 2nd Session Options: Celebrate Urban Birds is a continental project which has already engaged more than 180,000 participants and over 6000 organizations – with more than 80% reaching underserved audiences! presenter: Flisa Stephenson from Cornell Lab of Ornithology Flying Wild has been a force in bird education since 2004 with partners in over 30 major cities across the United States. presenter: Ed McCrea, Council for Environmental Education Connecting People and Nature Through Citizen Science will explore successful programs that have not only introduced people to birds but also got them involved with conservation action. presenters: Diane Husic from Moravian College and John Rowden from New York City Audubon THE Workshop: Taking Action for Diversity in Birding Participants will work together in small groups to develop realistic goals and basic action steps to start reaching new communities in their own areas with birding opportunities. Our presenters and panelists will circulate through the workshops and be available as a resource to facilitate development of realistic goals and simple aciton plan. Plans will be published online to highlight the concerted effort for birding diversity and to inspire others to bring birding and bird conservation to broader audiences.
