Changing the Face of American Birding

Tips and advice for effectively reaching new audiences with
birding opportunities and bird conservation actions
Some general considerations for bird educators as they strive to get new and
broader audiences interested in birding include:

Conference presenters and participants offered the many strategies and
approaches to effectively reach new people with birding. We hope you
can benefit from some of these suggestions!

Douglas Gray challenged us all to simply invite a friend, neighbor, colleague
of a "different hue" out on a bird walk
. Not only will we share birding with
someone new but we will also learn about each other as people.

Dudley Edmondson and others strongly suggested that organizations could reach
new audiences by
offering bird walks in geographic proximity to those

Mike Mangiaracina shared his school's wildly successful winter bird festival which
has attracted hundreds of people over the last several years. Susan Bonfield
talked about
International Migratory Bird Day. Why not organize such an
event in your own area?  

Roger Rivera, Flisa Stevenson, and others discussed the importance of
meeting, or even partnering, with leaders in local communities
. These
leaders could include ministers, teachers, politicians, church groups, scout
troops, and other locals who know their community well and care about their
fellow citizens.

Keith Russell, Paul Baicich, Anita Guris, and others talked about either
becoming mentors or finding mentors to which new birders could relate.
Relevant mentors could be based on age, race, culture, locality, or other similar

Kim Kaufman discussed the
Ohio Young Birders Club. This approach could
easily be tried in your own hometown.

Flisa Stevenson shared Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Celebrate Urban Birds

Eddie Gonzalez, Diane Husic, and Drew Lanham discussed their involvement
Together Green Fellowship Program. Learn more about this initiative.
